Consumer awareness in diet and health issues has increased dramatically in recent years. There is a huge demand for healthy alternatives with Consumers more informed on the association of diet with health problems such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Consumers are actively looking for more information on what nutrients are present in food products in order to make a more informed choice when purchasing.

The Food Technology Centre uses a programme called Microdiet to calculate the Nutritional Values. Microdiet is a dietary analysis package, which provides information for a list of foods for over 60 nutrients, together with energy ratio and amino and fatty acid values. The software is based on the McCance and Widdowson Nutrient Database.  It is a very fast and efficient system and many products can be analyzed in a relatively short time. Based on ingredient specifications, inclusions and pack weight supplied by the client, the composition of the major nutritional parameters is provided per 100g of product. The Information is generated in 2 possible formats depending on the Clients intention to make Nutritional Claims on the Packaging.

Group 1 - Lists the four main Nutritional Criteria

Energy Kcal/Kj
Protein g
Carbohydrates g
Fat g

Group 2 – List is more comprehensive

Of which Saturates g

US Nutritional Data can also be generated for products intended for export.
