WordPress customisation - Ring Forth Web Studio

By: Ring Forth  05/12/2011

Once up and running, a WordPress site makes publishing and editing online content a breeze. And while setting up a basic WordPress blog is a simple process, more advanced customisation — allowing much of the power of WordPress to be exploited — can still be tricky. It’s also a good idea to customise the theme — the look and feel — of a WordPress site to ensure it stands out from the rest.

While it may still be primarily a blogging system, the vast array of plugins and themes now available; along with the ease with which it can be customised, make WordPress appropriate for a wide range of different projects (this site, for instance, is powered by WordPress).

Once up and running, keeping a WordPress site up-to-date is simplicity itself. The site content can be edited and updated by almost anyone who has ever used a Word Processor.

Setting up a basic WordPress site can be done at little or no cost, but many people want to ensure that their site is tailored specifically to their needs. I can produce custom themes and specific functionality (using plugins) to make your WordPress site distinct.

WordPress Themes

As mentioned, this site is powered by WordPress. For an example of some of the other custom themes I’ve produced, check out the following sites…

Web design - Ring Forth Web Studio

Web browsers, even today, can prove a stumbling block for site design, with different versions of different browsers rendering the same site in sometimes drastically different ways. Visual cues such as hyperlink styles play a role alongside organisational cues such as site hierarchy and the labelling of site sections. Many problems encountered late in a site’s development are avoided through thoughtful design of the underlying architecture.

XHTML / CSS coding - Ring Forth Web Studio

Despite the significance of server-side technologies and the rise in popularity of environments such as Flash, HTML — the language used to create the web — retains a key role in web design and development. XHTML is basically an XML-based re-definition of HTML, designed to pave the way for future additions and developments. Taking consideration of site needs and browser compatibility issues, style sheets should be used wherever possible.

ColdFusion programming - Ring Forth Web Studio

From a bog-standard Microsoft Access database — sufficient for a mailing list or club membership record — up to the enterprise-level SQL Server for more traffic-intensive sites. Both they, and the code written to interact with them, should be engineered to provide a stable, scalable environment. Secure password-protected areas for backend Content Management Systems and members-only sections of a public site.

Intranets & Extranets - Ring Forth Web Studio

Intranets are protected from people outside the organisation using a number of technologies, which may include password-protection, Security Sockets Layer connections, or data tunneling. As with an intranet, extranets utilise any number of security measures, such as encryption and digital certificates, to ensure that only authorised users are admitted.
