Mechanical Engineering - Human Powered Mechanisms

Movement are expert at developing clever internal mechanisms which link the simplest of human movements to the most complex of device sequences. We will identify through our HFE investigation just how the human body and its movement is to be harnessed and we will design the mechanism which will do that. The goal here is that the human body and mind engages intuitively with the device and the internal mechanism within the device performs the task effectively.

3D CAD Engineering

The process of engineering the mechanism cannot begin early enough, Movement combine this CAD design of the mechanics with the concept generation phase. Both disciplines are inherently creative and obviously linked to the Human Factors already investigated. Therefore one cannot place the product design ahead of the mechanism as it is the later which drives the realisation. All mechanisms are built in 3D CAD and can be initially vetted on screen for their appropriateness.

Proof Of Principle

Movement have the capability to produce high quality and accurate test rigs which can be used to validate and refine early mechanism concepts. Normally this process is performed in close cooperation with our clients as they link their Engineering teams with ours so that both the ‘business end’ and ‘human end’ of the device are intrinsically linked and refined in tandem.

Assembly & Debugging

Another hugely important Engineering task is the method by which the device is to be constructed, assembled and secured. This form of engineering in 3D CAD normally occurs much later in the process but this is not the case with the Movement team. It is imperative that the Industrial Designer knows early in the development programme just how the mechanics of the entire concept construction works and what will need to be refined further.

This is the creative first step in realising just what a product concept is going to look like, the form it is going to take, the shape, size and position of controls and actuators and how the touch-points for the human body will be sculpted.
