Ethernet OAM is used to detect and isolate faults and measure performance in end to end Carrier Ethernet connections. IEEE 802.1ag specifies the mechanism to detect and isolate faults. ITU Y.1731 specifies the mechanism to measure performance including Frame Loss, Frame Delay and Frame Delay Variation. As Carrier Ethernet becomes more widely deployed, the ability to manage networks and provide real time visibility into the network becomes essential.
