I am substitute member of the European Parliament's committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, known as ENVI.

The ENVI Committee is responsible for environmental policy and protection concerning: air, soil and water pollution, waste management and recycling, dangerous substances and preparations, noise levels, climate change and protection of biodiversity.

Sustainable development, International and regional measures and agreements aimed at protecting the environment, restoration of environmental damage and civil protection are also priorities of the Parliament's Environment committee.

From a public health perspective the ENVI committee is concerned with the programmes and specific actions in the field of public health, the safety of pharmaceutical and cosmetic products and health aspects of bioterrorism.

In relation to food safety issues the Environment committee is focused on the labelling and safety of foodstuffs, veterinary legislation concerning protection against risks to human health; public health checks on foodstuffs and food production systems.

Agriculture : Mairead McGuinness

Arising from the Lisbon Treaty, the Agriculture Committee has a much greater say in the decision-making process at European level as ‘co-decision’ means that the Parliament is equally involved with the European Commission and the Council. The Committee is responsible for the development and implementations of the Common Agricultural Policy, rural development, veterinary and plant health, animal welfare and forestry.

Food Safety : Mairead McGuinness

The EU's approach to food safety aims to assure a high level of food safety, animal health, animal welfare and plant health within the European Union through farm-to-table measures and adequate monitoring, while ensuring the effective functioning of the internal market. The importance of food safety cannot be understated as we have seen the problems even minor food scares can cause for producers, retailers and consumers.

Food Security : Mairead McGuinness

Food security is a recurring theme in the Parliament's Agriculture Committee, of which I am a member, as the EU strives to ensure that food continues to be readily available in the EU at reasonable prices and imported in a fair manner from other countries.

Disability : Mairead McGuinness

Legislating equal opportunities for people with disabilities is the responsibility of national governments but promoting and protecting the rights of disabled people should, I believe, be engrained in the fabric of our work as European legislators.
