There are a number of other products on the market that are sold as alternatives to ion-exchange water softeners. Some just stop the scale building up without actually softening the water; others only work in one place, like the shower. Here’s a quick overview of the main ones.

These devices reduce scale build-up by encouraging the hardness minerals to remain in the water. The basic principle is that they encourage the formation of crystals as the water flows through them. When the water is then heated, the scale tends to form around the crystals rather than on the internal surfaces of the boiler or pipework.

Advantages:

  • Relatively small
  • Cheap
  • Easy to install

Disadvantages

  • Unpredictable performance
  • Don’t soften water

Chemical treatment involves the addition of chemicals - usually polyphosphate-based - to the water. It is intended to reduce scale and corrosion. Chemical treatment is usually only used in the boiler and radiators, so it doesn’t affect the water you use around the house.

Advantages:

  • Effective against scale
  • Relatively small
  • Cheap

Disadvantages:

  • Doesn’t soften water
  • Doesn’t affect bath, shower, sinks etc
