If you want to maximise your profit from your bloodstock it is essential to prepare each horse professionally for the sales.
At Grove Stud we concentrate on the yearling and two-year-old markets. As serious investors in both markets we realise as much as anyone the financial implications of getting the sales preparation right. Our staff and facilities can make the difference to your animal.
"It’s always a pleasure to buy from Grove Stud – the horses are turned out and shown to an exceptional standard and it’s been the source of some of my most successful purchases over the years.”
Johnny McKeever, Mckeever St Lawrence Bloodstock Agents
The yearlings at Grove have a ten week preparation. While we try to tailor each horse’s preparation. individually there are certain key ingredients that they all receive:
- All yearlings get turned out daily in individual paddocks almost regardless of weather. The benefits are two fold as this helps to keep horses relaxed and therefore they maintain weight and also a few hours of grazing aids a healthy digestive system.
- All horses get fed four times daily.
- All horses get assessed weekly and a record kept of these observations. Their following week’s feed and exercise regime is planned based on this assessment.
The exercise is a mixture of handwalking, walker, lunging and driving with the aim of producing a well muscled athlete.
"I am always impressed by the quality of the yearlings from Grove Stud and the professionalism of the way the animals are produced and shown to our team during inspection. We have also had great success with our purchases from Grove Stud."
Peter Doyle, Peter Doyle Bloodstock
At Grove we are aiming to develop yearlings into true racehorses. Almost all the breeze-up horses come to Grove shortly after the yearling sales in the autumn. We break them and then turn them out in groups for a few weeks. This is vital as it is during this break that we get them into the habit of eating large amounts. It cannot be done while we are trying to increase their workload later on. We have all the facilities we need to produce sound breeze-up horses with lunge rings, all-weather and grass gallops. Having spent almost ten years in racing I know what the end product should look like and how to achieve it. The quality and skill of the staff is paramount in producing theses horses. We currently have three breeze-up graduates in the Godolphin Racing Stable while in France the French Guineas and Oaks runner up Tamazarite is also a Grove Stud breeze-up graduate.
“Grove Stud consignment is always high on our list having had unbelievable luck being a regular purchaser. Always a first stop at any of the sales and always looking forward to their draft.”
Brian Meehan, Trainer
