We aim to encourage and support Deaf LGBT people within the mainstream LGBT community. Part of this support is to ensure that Deaf LGBT people have access to information that is provided to the wider gay community by such organisations as Outhouse, Belongto, Gay Men Health Project, GLEN, etc.
Greenbow offers advocacy, advice and support to its clients/members with regard to both affiliated and outside agencies. Greenbow operates within a strict agreement of confidentiality.
Greenbow is affiliated with the Irish Deaf Society through the National Council. The National Council is an umbrella group, made up of local and national Deaf organisations in Ireland. The Council determine on the primary concerns and priorities affecting the Deaf Community, leading to the policies and the approaches to lobbying for equality and rights of Deaf people.
Greenbow is also affiliated with numerous other Deaf organisations throughout Ireland as well as local and national LGBT organisations. Through these affiliations Greenbow is able to offer advocacy on a wide range of subjects affecting Deaf LGBT people.
Greenbow offers information, advice and advocacy on a broad range of public and social services for Deaf LGBT people. It also offers support in translating letters and making telephone calls on your behalf. If you have anything you would like to talk about, in confidence, and would like us to find out more information for you, please feel free to contact us to make an appointment.
Our social events allow our members the opportunity to meet people from their own culture and background and to share common experiences through their own language. This helps to provide our members with a stronger sense of self-identity and a place where they can express themselves freely. They also provide an outlet for many of our members who face isolation due to living in rural areas and/or because of language barriers faced in the wider community. Please contact Greenbow for more details or see our newsletters.
Our workshops and classes are designed to help inform our members about what is happening in their own Deaf LGBT community, the LGBT mainstream community and the wider mainstream community at large. These workshops include information about everything from our members civil rights, changes in law, understanding other disabilities; to self-defence and self-esteem building. Information meetings are also provided through our affiliation with the Irish Deaf Society. Information meetings provide information about social and public services. Please contact Greenbow for more details or see our newsletters.
Ideas for workshops and events are suggested by our members and board alike. We then advertise these suggestions to all of our members and the most popular, and most beneficial are considered. So if you have a subject you would like to know more about or ideas for an event (either to be setup by Greenbow or being run by another organisation) and you think it would benefit other members, please contact us using the details below with your suggestions.
