Hypnosis is of proven benefit for individual with habit control problems such as smoking, weight loss, nail biting and unwanted behaviours. ypnotherapy is used to treat anxiety, self-confidence, self-esteem and other personal issues. It is of benefit for to children, adolescents and adults. Hypnosis can improve concentration and memory and reduce exam anxiety and stress at times of challenge. Hypnosis can also be of benefit to atheletes wishing to improve performance.

Pregnancy and Infant Massage

Massage therapy is a scientifically validated treatment which manipulates the soft tissues of the body. Its aim is the restoration of the body's major functions and relief of tension and stress as well as muscle aches and pains. Hippocrates, the Greek father of medicine stated, "The physician must be experienced in many things but assuredly in rubbing for rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose or loosen a joint that is too tight." Modern massage therapy has built on this theory for many years and is now recognised as a speciality treatment. It is particularly helpful for pregnant women and for infants and will help the child feel calm, sleep better and reduce colic. It's benefits for pregnancy include deeper relaxation and a reduction of the discomfort associated with carrying a child.

  • Pregnancy Massage – relieves the strains and stresses on the body
  • Infant Massage – including training for parents.
  • Deep Tissue Massage – improves healing and recovery for muscle-stressed individuals

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a natural treatment with proven benefits. Osteopathy is based on the belief that the body has a natural ability to heal itself with corrective adjustements needed at times. Wellness, in terms of osteopathic science is maintained by the free flow of fluids throughout the body. These fluids carry most of the body's life-sustaining nutrients. Obstructions that interfere with the flow of these fluids is the focus of osteopathyic treatment. Obstructions cause the body to lose its ability to heal. An osteopath manipulates the body to correct these imbalances. It is not uncommon for people who have experienced trauma or significant emotional upset to have obstructions in the free flow of fluid (a common one is shallow breathing or temporary holding of breath under stress). Osteopathy is a treatment to correct this and return the body and mind to optimal functioning.

Play and Filial Therapy What is play therapy?

Play is a child's natural form of expression. Play Therapy uses play to communicate with children. It helps them release their fears and worries and express their needs and wishes. the use of play allows children to communicate feelings bout difficult experiences they may not be able to recall or express in words. Play Therapy sessions are conducted in a playroom with a qualified Play Therapist. A wide variety of toys and play materials are available to the child to explore important issues and feelings. The child's parents or carers are closely involved in the therapy process and are sometimes invited to join their child in the playroom. To find out more about Play Therapy and Filial Therapy,

Services for Parents and Carers of Adopted Children

Adopted children have unique needs. Many of them come from backgrounds of neglect, trauma, chaos or abuse. Some of them have been born with developmental difficulties. A significant number of them have attachment difficulties which cause them to exhibit disturbed or challenging behaviour at home, school or community.

At the Connolly Counselling Centre we have a multi-disciplinary team of specialists who can assess, treat and advise these children and their parents/caregivers. A unique facility at the centre is our play room which is fully equipped with audio/visual recording facilities. In this setting we can observe children at play, alone or with parent/caregiver. We can record these observation sessions for further viewing at home. We are also able, due to the latest technology, to have parent and child play together while we issues instructions that are given to the adult through a discreet ear piece. These instructions can then be carried out and recorded. The recordings can then be used for follow-up in the family home or care setting. This facility is currently the only one of it's kind in the private sector in Ireland.

Special Education Services

Consultation and assessment is available for anyone with concerns about special education conditions, education or treatment. Assessment can be provided for the full range of special needs conditions including ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Behaviour/Emotional Disorders and other issues impacting on education of chldren, adolescents or adults. We have a specialist on staff with years of experience in writing Individual Education Plans and in advising parents and teachers in providing apropriate educational services.

Training seminars and presentations can be orgainsed for teachers, caregivers and others interested in increasing their knowledge about special needs conditions. Training is offered in-house at the centre and can be organised and provided at your school or institution. Our special education staff has years of experience in teacher training and consultations to schools throughout Ireland.

Family Support Services at the Owen Connolly Counselling Centre

The Connolly Counselling Centre is committed to enhancing the quality of life of individuals with autism spectrum disorders through innovative personalised supports, expertise, collaboration and advocacy. We adhere to the core principles of the Autism LifeCare Trust and have recently appointed Ms. Geraldine Graydon as Director of Family Support Services.

Autism LifeCare Trust values

  • inclusion of individuals with autism in all aspects of society
  • respect for the dignity and uniqueness of the individual with autism
  • dedication to best practice, quality, responsivness and teamwork
  • fairness, equality, choice and opportunities
  • integrity

Through developing Family Support Networks and Advocacy-our aim is to help families of people with autism to set up personal networks and to engage in planning for the future of their son or daughter with autism. The purpose is to inspire families to develop a Personal Future Plan with their loved one through person-centred planning

  • To guide them through the process
  • To offer practical tips and technical advice
  • To connect them with their families
  • To improve the present
  • To make the future secure and safe for their sons and daughters with autism

Adolescents and adults with autism are emerging as people who often require a continuation of the intensive training they receive in childhood in order to retain the skills they have acquired during their early education years. They need these specialised autism services to follow them into adulthood and their mature years.

In order to develop these services we need to understand and get to know the individual as a person. We need to understand how autism impacts on them as they engage with the community. People with autism need specific assistance as individuals to make decisions about how they want to live their lives and the supports that will be necessary to make that happen. In Ireland very few people on the autistic spectrum get to live the life they want or get to choose with whom they want to live.

Here at the Connolly Counselling Centre we have a dedicated team of professionals ready to assist you and your family by providing seminars, training programmes, information evenings, support groups for parents and siblings and a resource centre. Under the direction of Geraldine Graydon, MSc., our team will be offering a variety of services over the coming months and years.
