Treatments Available
As well as the provision of dental treatments through the state schemes, the vast majority of family dentists undertake private treatments for patients. There are a number of treatments that are not provided under the state schemes, such as, crowns, veneers, orthodontics, bridgework etc. and patients may, in certain circumstances, avail of tax relief on the cost of those treatments. Further information on tax relief is available from your Inspector of Taxes or by telephoning the Revenue Forms & Leaflets Service at (01) 878 0100.You and Your Dentist
Patients are advised to visit their dentist regularly and following a clinical examination, history and diagnosis to discuss any recommended treatment plan and alternatives. Patients should receive an estimate of the costs involved and agreement reached on both costs and the treatment plan before treatment is commenced.Increased Options
Some private practices limit their practices to a specific type(s) of treatment e.g. Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics, Paedodontics (Children’s Dentistry), Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics etc. Many of these dentists accept patients on a referral basis from the family dentist.Looking to the Future
Specialisation is being gradually introduced. At the present time the statutory body regulating the professional registration of dental surgeons i.e. the Dental Council has opened a register of Dental Specialists in both oral surgery and orthodontics.
