What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of ‘whole person healing’. It uses the complete mental, emotional and physical symptom picture of a patient in an initial consultation that last about an hour and a half long. This symptom picture is the external indication of the patient's internal disease, a homeopathic remedy is prescribed at the end of the appointment or shortly afterwards.  By this method the central disease cause, at the root of all the patients symptoms is removed, meaning the symptoms are unlikely to return again. The word Homeopathy, comes from the Greek words meaning ‘similar suffering’. This idea of ‘like cures like’ or ‘similar suffering’ is the basis of all homeopathic remedy prescription and treatment. For example, everybody has peeled an onion at some time and experienced the tears and stinging eyes. You cry, your eyes become red and sore, a dribble may run from your nose. The homeopathic remedy Allium Cepa made from red onions, is used when a sick patient exhibits these type of symptoms. It doesn’t matter if they have a cold, hay fever or asthma, if they display these symptoms Allium Cepa will help to cure them. Three clients may be suffering from migraine but each person may be prescribed a different remedy depending on their own individual experience of the migraine. So this is very much a personal and individual treatment for each person.

What are homeopathic remedies?

Homeopathic remedies were discovered in 1796 by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann the founder of homeopathy. He pioneered remedy potentisation, a method of diluting natural substances in water, and vibrating them many times, to release their internal healing energy. There are thousands of homeopathic remedies in use today to treat a wide variety of diseases, depending upon the symptoms of each individual patient.

How can Homeopathy help me?

Many people come to a homeopath for help with a specific symptom or condition. For example arthritis, asthma, back pain, indeterminate aches and pains, menstrual problems, migraines, rheumatism, sciatica or skin conditions. A good homeopath however, will not only treat your specific symptom or condition, but your whole person, guiding you back to health in the most gentle and natural way.

What does a homeopathic consultation involve?

The initial consultation lasts about one and a half hours, during which time you talk and answer questions about your symptoms and problems. The homeopath will then analyse your case and decide on the specific remedy for you. If a follow up appointment is required it can be arranged at the end of your consultation.

Are homeopathic remedies Safe?

Created using natural animal, vegetable or mineral substances diluted in water, homeopathic remedies are completely safe and without any side effects. Sometimes a patient may experience a slight aggravation of their symptoms for a short time, but this is just evidence that the immune system is working harder to combat the disease. Homeopathic remedies are completely non-addictive, and once the healing process has started you can stop taking the remedy.

What if I am taking conventional medicines?

Homeopathic remedies can be safely taken alongside conventional medicines and are sometimes prescribed to complement their action. If you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicines, you should tell your homeopath about them. Always consult your doctor before ceasing any prescription medicines.

Things to bear in mind ...

Although you may get an immediate response from your remedy, healing is a process which takes time. Be patient and allow the natural healing process to take place. If you are coming to the homeopath about a child’s health, the child will need to be present during the consultation.
