EnBIO: CoBlast™ - Drug Delivery Surface

EnBIO's third offering is a drug eluting surface for metallic medical implants. Work on this is ongoing. However, the initial draft specification has three main components.

  • Possibility of eluting a broad range of drugs. Initial focus is on antibiotics
  • Applicable to the full range of metallic implant surfaces (Ti, NiTi, CoCr and various Stainless Steels)
  • Customizable elution profile,
    • few hours (e.g. as a burst of antibiotics for infection control in the immediate time after the surgery)
    • few days (e.g. 10 days for general infection control)
    • few months (e.g. 2 to 3 months elution of sirolimus for drug eluting stents)
  • The drug cannot elute at concentrations less than the Minimum Effective Concentration (MEC) in the case of antibiotics

Medical Device Surface Modification for enhanced functionality

The latter two product offerings (Antimicrobial and Drug Delivery) are an extension of the first product as they use the Hydroxyapatite as the carrier to place the active agents on the surface. These are all based on EnBIO's novel patent pending surface modification technology known as CoBlast™. EnBIO is initially focusing on three product offerings.


EnBIO: CoBlast™ - Osteoconductive Surface Technology

EnBIO's in-vivo (animal trials) and in-vitro experiments completed to-date and the data from them confirm that an OsteoZip™ surface has better bone fixation than any other osteoconductive surface. This technology will also be of interest to dental implant manufacturers where there is less adoption of HA coating and more traditionally a focus on the use of roughening technologies.


EnBIO: CoBlast™ - Antimicrobial Surface Coating Services

OsteoZapTM is designed to prevent infection and biofilm formation on orthopaedic implants such as hips and knees, trauma devices, and spinal and dental implants by combining long-term infection prevention and anti-colonization functionality with the osteointegration benefits of EnBIO’s OsteoZip surfaces. OsteoZap is an apatitic/bioceramic surface optimized to be antimicrobial.

Surface roughness measurements for EnBIO’s OsteoZip™ surface are compared to a number of other similar and typical orthopedic implant surfaces (blank titanium, titanium grit blasted with Al2. SEM images of the OsteoZip™ surface were compared to a number of other similar and typical orthopedic implant surfaces: bare titanium. Titanium grit blasted with MCD - apatitic grit, titanium CoBlasted with Al2.
